The Quotes We Never See

Have you ever waited for a sign to help you make a decision? To help you decide on whether or not to take a risk? Have you gotten all of the signs you were looking for, but, even then, still didn’t feel like it was the right time to take the risk?

Well, a couple of weeks ago, I made a major decision: I did not take a risk. The “signs” I’d been looking for had all been there. There was nothing keeping me from taking this risk. However, call it intuition or what have you I decided to sleep on the decision.

On the next day, my dreamer side was calmer, and I saw the consequences making the decision.

This is not to say that I don’t believe in taking risks or that we shouldn’t get out of our comfort zones or that we shouldn’t go on unplanned adventures, etc. I wanted to share this story because it got me thinking: when do we ever see the quotes on notebook covers, mugs, and t-shirts that say,

don’t do something stupid today

or

think it over

They usually say something like go on an adventure and take a risk. When I’d been looking for “signs”, everything seemed to reflect those type of positive quotes that seem to ask that you drop everything you’re doing, and begin, act, or choose right there and then.

It’s good to take risks, to go on adventures, and to believe in your dreams. But when do fancy notebooks covers remind us to take some time to make a decision?

Taking an extra day to make my decision brought me back to my common sense, brought me out of dreamland, and reminded me that I still have many cards to play.

I may have lost one opportunity, but then I realized that I still have an abundance of other opportunities. For me this was a reminder that as important as it is to take risks, it’s also important to not take them when the time isn’t right.
