Time of the Hummingbirds, Time of the Trees

Turtles, owls, butterflies, and hummingbirds have stood out to me throughout the years. Each of these images represented a different message during different phases of my life. The time of turtles was a time in my life when I wanted results fast. During this time, I remember reading the book Tortuga by Rudolfo A. Anaya. (“Tortuga” is the Spanish word for turtle.) Given the chance, this is the time I would probably choose to go back to–not to change anything, but to live with more presence. The hummingbird started showing up in books, in author interviews, in art, and even in my clothes. The hummingbird became a reminder to live each day to the fullest, a reminder of life’s brevity. The image that is showing up lately is the tree. I see and experience it mostly in meditation. The tree that I’ve been seeing is so tall and wide that I can only see and feel its strong trunk.
